The Academy of Scuba
Richie Kohler and Shadow Divers
The Academy of Scuba Presents
Dive Wreck Alley with Richie Kohler
August 1 and August 2, 2009
… A mild current takes you on a journey to the
past.  A place where time stands still. Carefully
gliding through the depths, intrepid divers will pass
through a window into a place where the ocean has
left its forgotten remnants. These divers are hungry
to find the missing piece to the puzzle that waits
below. As you near the bottom, a recognizable
shape begins to form. A straight line; a round window. Next, the ghostly form
of a ship materializes in front of you. As you look at the wreck, past and the
present meet. How did she get here?  Did she follow the siren’s call? Whether
sunk intentionally or tragically; whether a sunken ship, a plane or an
automobile, the call of wrecks is nearly irresistible to divers. This passion has
driven hard core wreck divers to the ends of the Earth to solve the mysteries
of the deep. Now it’s your turn  ...

About Wreck Alley

Your SDI Wreck Diving course will be done in San Diego’s world famous Wreck
Alley.  Wreck Alley affords us the  ability to dive and learn advanced level wreck
diving techniques in our back yard.  Wake up in the morning and attend
invigorating lecture to assist you in that afternoon’s dive. Classroom sessions
are done at the Mission Bay Marina. In the afternoon,  it's your time to dive
classic wrecks like the  the Canadian Destroyer HMS Yukon (

), the Coast Guard Cutter Ruby E and the World War II Aircraft the P-38.
About Your Courses

SDI Wreck Diver Course: Wreck diving can be one of the most exciting aspects of sport diving and can
uncover pieces of history seen by few others, however every effort must be made to maximize safe diving
techniques. In your SDI Wreck Diver course, we will discuss and use equipment and techniques
commonly employed while wreck diving.  This course is taught as a limited-penetration course.  ”Limited
penetration is defined as “swim through or within the ambient light of entry point,” Richie Kohler, John
Flanders and their staff will teach you how to safely plan and execute wreck dives in an enjoyable way.

We will be doing our four wreck alley dives off the Marissa.  The Marissa is a custom 38' Delta
dive boat. She has a large covered deck area and she is one of the newest, cleanest, and
nicest dive boats in San Diego. The Marissa is U.S. Coast Guard Ocean Rated*, originally for
28, however, we will only have 10 students on the boat, so everybody gets plenty of elbow
room.  The Marissa has been chartered exclusively for our class, thus you will only be diving
with fellow students and staff.  No "tag along divers!

About Richie Kohler

Richie Kohler's passion for exploring shipwrecks has led him around the world to such wrecks as the Andrea Doria, RMS
Titanic and the HMHS Britannic, but it was his work identifying the WWII German Submarine, U-869, that catapulted his
diving career into the world of television and underwater documentary film making. The bestselling book that it inspired,
"Shadow Divers" by Robert Kurson is soon to be a major motion picture by 20th Century Fox. Alongside longtime diving
partner John Chatterton, Kohler has co-hosted 57 episodes of the History Channel series, "Deep Sea Detectives", and is
now consulting and producing for the film and television industry.
